What Is MELT?
“MELT” stands for Mandatory Entry Level Training, a standardized training program introduced in BC in 2021. It is now the only approved pathway to obtaining a Class 1 commercial driver’s licence in the province.
This curriculum outlines the minimum hours and competencies required to ensure every new commercial driver receives consistent, high‑quality training focused on safety, professionalism, and practical skill development.
Course Prerequisites
Before enrolling in the Class 1 MELT program, students must:
- Be at least 19 years old
- Hold a valid Class 1 learner’s licence prior to the course start date

Time Commitment & Training Breakdown
The Class 1 MELT program consists of 140 hours of structured training, typically completed over 6–8 weeks. The course is divided into two main phases:
Phase 1: Classroom & Yard Training (First 3 Weeks)
- Morning classroom sessions covering theory, safety, regulations, and professional driving knowledge
- Afternoon in‑yard training in small groups
- Hands‑on practice with pre‑trip inspections, coupling/uncoupling, backing, and vehicle controls
Phase 2: One‑on‑One In‑Truck Training (Last 5 Weeks)
- Individual instruction with a certified driving instructor
- Real‑world driving experience on highways, city routes, industrial areas, and rural roads
- Skill development in shifting, maneuvering, defensive driving, and road‑test preparation
This structure ensures you receive both foundational knowledge and personalized, practical training.
What are the prerequisites?
You must be a minimum of 19 years of age and hold your class 1 learners prior to the start date of the course.
What is my time commitment?
This course is 140 hours which runs approximately 6-8 weeks. The first 3 weeks is all day training starting with theory in the morning and finishing the afternoons with In Yard training in groups. The last 5 weeks is 1-1 instructor training in the truck.
